Marines killed...

One of my former students - Chris Dyer, Class of 2002 (Edit: Class of 2004), my student for two years - was killed in Iraq today. He was one of fourteen Marines from an Ohio reserve unit killed yesterday morning in Iraq. This is the second time this year that this has hit home to me...first with Jeremy Wright, and now with Chris... Two deaths are too many, and we've seen far more than just two.

From an email sent directly from Chris's father today...

"Chris was killed this morning in the incident reported in the news.

Christopher Jenkins Dyer was 19 when he died in Iraq. He lived a rich life in those 19 years. He became a Marine, but not because he was poor or without options. He was a Marine out of duty and a desire to be among the best.

Chris graduated in 2004 with honors from Princeton High School. He played viola in the school orchestra and was on the varsity diving team. He took the most advanced science and math courses offered in high school. He had been accepted to the Ohio State University’s Honors Program and planned to enroll there in January to major in Finance. He graduated Parris Island recruit training 2 September, 2004. He was deployed as a member of 3rd platoon, Lima Company, 3rd battalion, 25th Marines.

Chris was an exceptionally intelligent and athletic child with enormous potential ahead of him. The Marines gave him the focus and resolve to achieve his potential. He was ready with a smile and a helping hand and was very caring of others. He thought of himself as a “squared away Marine”. He was very proud to have achieved that title.

His loss is not only to his many friends and family, but also to his country.

He is survived by – and will be missed forever by- his father, mother, and twin sisters.

To his family, his friends, his country, and to himself, he was “Always Faithful" "
