Amazing!!!!! Not quite...

The Amazing Message Plant! Water the seed and seven to ten days later, a surprise message appears written on the leaves!

Clearly, it's a miracle of modern genetic engineering!

Or, it could be that the company uses a laser (I'm guessing here) to write the message on the outside of the seed coat and that the message doesn't really show up on the leaves but rather on what's left of the seed coat...but that could just be my skeptical thoughts...

Based on the appearance of the location of the "I love you leaves" on the seedling, those are, in fact, the cotyledon leaves which were once part of the seed. The cotyledon leaves act as the main source of nutrition for the developing seed. Once the cotyledon leaves break the surface of the soil, they will then photosynthesize and provide glucose for the seedling until more and more leaves form and then the cotyledon leaves...and the message "I love you" will shrivel, dessicate and fall off the plant.

Now...if you could time the shrivelling and dessication with the break up...you could just blame it on the plant.

Right...that's pretty much what I meant when I said they weren't really leaves...

I just didn't want to drop that much knowledge on the non-science folks...

Thanks, though, IBBecky...

That wasn't that much science...I mean I could have gotten into the various biochemical pathways involved in the germination of the seed...but I was restrained...

Johnny pointed out that you could actually give this plant to a girl you wanted to break up with, wait till the leaves that said "I love you" fell off and then say, "I have to break up with you...the plant says I don't love you anymore"

pretty ingenius for a 9 year old...
